DEFINITION
Pace is the broad term for how fast and how rhythmically a driver runs the course. It is not the same as raw top speed: a driver with high pace is fast and consistent, transition to transition, lap to lap.
In a lead/chase context, 'matching pace' means the chase keeps up; 'losing pace' means the chase falls back.
HISTORY & ORIGIN
Standard motorsport vocabulary. Carries the same meaning in F1, rally and drift.
TECHNIQUE BREAKDOWN
Driver builds pace through smooth, repeatable inputs and minimal corrections. Judges compare run-to-run pace as a consistency indicator.
PRO TIPS & COMMON MISTAKES
• Pace is consistency × speed. Both factors matter; one alone is not enough.
• Common mistake: chasing a single fast lap and accepting four slow ones around it.
His pace through the second half of qualifying was the highest of any driver.
