2011 was one of the most pivotal turning points in the history of Turkish drifting. Following the Landirenzo Drift Challenge, Abdurrahman Özen and Mustafa Mert Kazanç had begun shaping a grand project in their minds: Türkiye's very own national drift championship. Only one thing remained. A name.
The Phone Call
Mustafa Mert had been wrestling with this question for some time, bouncing ideas off a few people he trusted. One day he picked up the phone and called me. The purpose of the call was simple: "We are looking for a name."
At the time, I was an active participant in Live For Speed, the popular online racing simulation. One of the clan names I had used in LFS was APEXMASTERS.
My answer was immediate: APEXMASTERS.
The Anatomy of the Name
"Apex" carries deep meaning for anyone who speaks the language of racing circuits. It is the most critical point of a corner, the heart of the ideal line, the moment where speed and control converge. "Masters" represents mastery, dominance, the pinnacle. Together: "Masters of the Apex."
It would have been difficult to find a more fitting name for drifting.
From a Clan Name to a National Championship
With the first APEXMASTERS rounds organised in 2012, the name was no longer just that of an online gaming clan — it had become the name of Türkiye's national drift championship. Over the years, gaining official recognition under the TOSFED umbrella, the championship grew into the definitive reference point of Turkish drift sport.
That phone call lasted a few minutes. No bureaucratic process, no brand consultant at the table. A search for a name, a suggestion, and a brief moment of thought. That is how it began.
